Cameron Thomas visits Friends of the Earth at the River Avon
Today I met with Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth to take water samples from the River Avon at the Abbey Mill, Tewkesbury.
Cameron Thomas MP has responded to the Government announcing a new review of the water industry, by calling for the regulator Ofwat to be replaced.
Today, the government announced a new Independent Water Commission to deliver the biggest review of the industry since privatisation.
However the Liberal Democrats have called for more urgency in dealing with the sewage crisis, which plagues Britain’s coastlines, lakes and rivers.
Liberal Democrat MP for Tewkesbury, Cameron Thomas, is currently in Colombia as part of the UK’s delegation at the international Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP 16, where protecting the ecology of rivers including The Severn is top of his agenda. He said:
"I welcome the Commission and a review of the industry is welcome.
"However, this ongoing scandal calls for urgent action, so that we stop profit-making private companies from destroying our waterways with sewage.
"The Government should introduce a new regulator that will hit polluting water companies with tough sanctions. It is time to put the environment before profit, starting with the water industry."
