Lib Dems Move to Increase Animal Protections in Tewkesbury
Having taken control of Tewkesbury Borough Council in May, the Liberal Democrats have begun to impress our environmental credentials across the Borough. 12th December saw 2 motions passed by the Lib Dem led Borough Council, both submitted by Cllr Liz Skelt (LD, Churchdown St John’s).
Seconded by Cllr Kashan Pervaiz (LD, Cleeve St Michael’s), the first formalises a ban on pets being awarded as prizes on Tewkesbury Council land. Cllr Richard Stanley (LD, Cleeve West), Leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council will now contact all Parishes within the Borough as well as the County Council to urge them to adopt this motion into policy.
Seconded by Cllr Nigel Adcock (LD, Cleeve Hill), the second motion moves to curtail the practice of Puppy Farming. It commits Tewkesbury Borough Council to publish the details of animal welfare charities and organisations, so that residents can source certified breeders. The Council will also publish guidance for avoidance of puppy farms or third-party sellers, in accordance with Lucy’s Law.
Cllr Liz Skelt said “A local resident asked me to investigate Pets As Prizes and I was shocked that the ban wasn’t already national policy, so I took action. Both motions inspired great debate within the chamber; it was clear that animal welfare is a priority to the residents of Tewkesbury Borough. Some excellent amendments were added by other members to extend the scope of both motions. It was an honour to bring both motions to council, to have them debated and passed so passionately”.
Liberal Democrat spokesperson Cameron Thomas said: “The Liberal Democrats are firmly committed to upholding and improving the rights and welfare of animals, in line with a wide-ranging commitment to preserve and protect the environment.”
