Lib Dems demand action as sewage scandal engulfs county

Shocking new figures reveal the scale of sewage dumping across Gloucestershire in 2024:
• 2,476 hours of sewage spilled into the River Coln
• 4,459 hours into Cerney Wick Brook
• 2,800 hours into the Severn at Blakeney
• Dozens of other sites across the county with sewage dumping taking place.
Meanwhile, Thames Water is hitting Gloucestershire residents with higher bills—despite failing to stop sewage spills. The Liberal Democrats are demanding urgent action to protect local waterways and hold water firms accountable.
In response, the Liberal Democrats will hold an urgent summit with water company bosses, demanding answers from Severn Trent and Thames Water CEOs if they take control of Gloucestershire council.
“For too long, the Conservatives in Westminster have let water companies hike bills while failing to fix crumbling infrastructure,” said Lib Dem spokesperson Cllr Paul Hodgkinson.
“The sewage scandal left by the previous Conservative government is going to take time to clean up. After 20 years of Tory control in Gloucestershire, they’ve given up fighting for local residents. The Liberal Democrats at Shire Hall will hold water bosses to account from day one.”
